The skunk is a member of the weasel family. Of the three different species of skunks in this part of the country, the spotted skunk, and the hog-nosed skunk are uncommon. Because of their extensive range, the species we encounter most often is the striped skunk. Skunks usually have from 2 to 12 offspring which are born in the spring. Breeding usually occurs in February and March, therefore, this is the time we notice the calls starting to come in for skunk removal. Striped skunks may have a short period of delayed implantation if they breed early. Western spotted skunks breed in September and have a longer period of delayed implantation (about 150 days). Eastern spotted skunks breed the same time of year as other skunks. Each of which produce litters at the same time.
